Thyolo District HospitalHospital was officially opened on April 10, 2005. The construction of the hospital was financed by the European Development Fund. ![]() This district hospital has very neat look, like other hospitals in Malawi. Every medical institution in Malawi has a dedicated staff or contractor whose job is to maintain the proper aesthetic appearance of the hospital. ![]() The Government of Malawi holds an annual competition, identifying health facilities that meet the best standards of sanitation. The hospital that won the competition receives additional funding of 3 million kwachas (3,000,000 MWK ~ 4,000 USD). Thyolo District Hospital received this award three times. ![]() The hospital serves the population of the province of Thyolo (more than 600,000 people). Patients of the hospital are also visitors from nearby areas, even foreigners. These people seek help in the Thyolo Dustrict Hospital, not because there are no hospitals in their places of residence. But patients are always looking for better medical care and better care. ![]() There are no restrictions on the place of residence or citizenship when receiving medical services in this hospital. There are always a lot of patients from Mozambique who are treated with the same attention in Thyolo District Hospital as patients from Malawi. ![]() As in other state hospitals in Malawi, the Thyolo District Hospital provides free medical services, regardless of where the patients come from. ![]() Thyolo District Hospital has doctors of various specialties (therapists, surgeons, ophthalmologists, dentists, physiologists and others), medical assistants, nurses, biomedicine staff, environmental personnel. There is a radiography department, a laboratory. Surgeries are performed here. ![]() Almost all types of actual diseases can be diagnosed in Thyolo District Hospital. However, complicated operations here are not carried out because of a shortage of equipment, and heavy patients are sent to the central hospital in Blantyre. ![]() Near the hospital (beyond its territory) there is a Guardian Shelter. The Shelter was built with the participation of the Satemwa Joint Body (charity community of the tea estate Satemwa). The Shelter is a large utility room, where there is a kitchen and laundry. Patients on inpatient treatment receive breakfast, lunch and dinner. But each patient is allowed to have one guardian, who can cook additional meals at the Shelter and take care of washing clothes and other necessities. The guardian can sleep in the hospital room, next to the patient. There are Guardian Shelters in almost all public hospitals in Malawi. The Guardian Shelter: ![]() ![]() For medical staff on the hospital territory there is a hostel: ![]() Tuberculosis in MalawiA serious problem in Malawi in general and in the province of Thyolo in particular is tuberculosis. For comparison, in developed countries in Europe or in America, up to 10 new cases of tuberculosis per 100 000 of population are diagnosed each year. In Russia - about 50 new cases of tuberculosis per 100 000 of population. In Malawi, this figure reaches 180 per 100 000 of population. ![]() In Thyolo, basically, adhere to the outpatient approach in the treatment of tuberculosis patients. When a person is diagnosed, he is prescribed medicine, which he must take at home under the supervision of his relatives. Patients with complicated cases of tuberculosis are admitted for treatment to the tuberculosis department of the Thyolo District Hospital. ![]() For the treatment of tuberculosis, Rifampicin, Ethambutol, Izoniazid, Pyrazinamide, Closerin, Levofloxacin, Ethionamid and combinations thereof are used herein. Patients newly treated for tuberculosis take the medication for six months, once a day in the morning. The duration of treatment of patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis is greater, such patients should receive medication for a period close to 24 months. Patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis are always isolated to avoid the spread of tuberculosis of this type. ![]() There are 17 medical centers in Thyolo, which are fully equipped for curation of tuberculosis. In these centers, patients with tuberculosis are diagnosed and treatment is started. The TB office of the District Hospital oversees the implementation of tuberculosis control programs in the province of Thyolo. At the disposal of the staff of the TB office of the Thyolo District Hospital, there are four motorcycles. ![]() The situation with the incidence of infectious diseases in Malawi, as we saw in the case of tuberculosis, can not be called satisfactory. But effective measures are taken to reduce morbidity and improve the health of the population. Malawi aims to the future, and we believe that this future will be kind. |
