Independence Drive

Independence Drive runs from west to east, passing along the southern border of the rich Namivawa area and finishing on the crossing with Victoria Avenue in the center of Blantyre. The street got its name in the early 60s, shortly after Malawi gained independence from the British crown.

Independence Drive, in the direction of Victoria Avenue, about 200 meters from Victoria Avenue. On the right, behind the white fence, there is the Blantyre Sports Club golf course:

Henderson street

Henderson Street is one of the main streets in Blantyre, located parallel to Independence Drive, just north of it. Henderson Street runs from the street called Buhanan in the west, at the eastern end crosses Victoria Avenue, then abuts on Haile Selassie Avenue. The length of Henderson Street is about one kilometer.

Henry Henderson, a Scottish missionary, arrived in Malawi on October 23, 1876. From the time of the Scottish Christian mission were created by Henderson and his associates, the city of Blantyre counts its history.

Masauko Chipembere Highway (Kamuzu Highway)

Masauko Chipembere Highway is a four-lane (2 lanes on each side) highway connecting Limbe (industrial district of Blantyre) with Blantyre center. The length of the highway is about 6 kilometers.

Masauko Chipembere Highway is part of the M2 road that runs from the center of Blantyre through Thyolo to the border with Mozambique.

Earlier, during the ruling of the first president of Malawi, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the highway was named in honour of him. After Banda left his post, the highway was renamed in honor of the national hero of Malawi, Masauko Chipembere.

Henry Masauco Blazius Chipembere (1930-1975) played a significant role in the struggle for Malawi independence. After graduating from a university in South Africa in 1954, Masauko Chipembere returned to Malawi and joined the struggle of his people against the colonial authorities.

Malawi gained independence from Great Britain on July 6, 1965. In memory of this important event, a monument was erected directly on the Masauko Chipembere Highway, approximately in its middle part. The monument is called the Independence Arch:

Nearby there is a pedestrian crossing:

The pedestrian crossing was built primarily to ensure the safety of students from the nearby primary school, Chichiri Primary School. This elevated pedestrian crossing is adjacent to the usual (visible on the first photo), located twenty meters away.
