Naminyanga Junior Primary School of MalawiIn Malawi, three stages of schooling: Nursery School, Primary School, Secondary School. ![]() ![]() Today we will tell (and show pictures) about the Malawi rural primary school. Children enter primary school at the age of 6-8 years. Duration of training is 8 years. In elementary school are taught English, Chichewa (Bantu folk language), life skills, mathematics, social science, biblical knowledge, art, introduction to science, agriculture. The primary school in Malawi is free, parents do not have to pay anything for the education of their children. ![]() ![]() The school calendar includes three semesters. Classes begin in September. The first semester lasts 3 months and 3 weeks. The second and third semesters are shorter for a week (3 months and 2 weeks each). Between the semesters there is a holidays lasting for 2 weeks, and at the end of the year the students are given a one-month vacation to rest before the new school year. ![]() ![]() The standard is 60 pupils per class. Each class has its teacher. However, due to the shortage of teachers, the number of students can reach two hundred per class. ![]() ![]() Not only teachers are lacking, but also educational facilities. Some children are teached just under a tree. In the dry season, the crown of a large tree can give the pupils salvation from the scorching African sun. However, it does not save from showers, and during the rainy season studying in the classes under the trees are not held. ![]() ![]() On the photos - Naminyanga Junior Primary school. This school has only two classrooms and 600 pupils. There are 5 teachers at the school. Naminyanga Junior Primary school is typical of rural Malawi. ![]() There is a big difference between rural schools and schools in cities. The urban schools in Malawi do not differ much from schools in the developed world. However, the pics of rural schools leave a sadness on the heart. Rural schools in Malawi are poor and overloaded with pupils. Frozen time: barefoot children, stones instead of chairs, classes under trees. Civilization, it seems, to have bypassed these places by the side. Poor and backward of Africa is here, in a rural African school. ![]() Many rural residents of Malawi have only primary school education. |
